He canceled the supersonic B-1A bomber program in part because this ATB program had such promising prospects. The process of building the world’s first capable nuclear stealth bomber would not be this simple. Production delays and rising costs soon caused the program significant grief.

eering, flight testing, aircraft production, and procurement. The cost of building an aircraft itself only sat at around $737 million, but total procurement costs pushed these numbers sky-high. Procurement costs include the expenses associated with purchasing spare parts, equipment, retrofitting the aircraft, and addressing software issues that could arise.

The project quickly became rather controversial in the United States due to just how much it was costing. The aircraft’s procurement involved considerable capital and operating expenses. As the Cold War was beginning to wind down, the need for these advanced, penetrating bombers became less dire. This resulted in Congress shrinking the planned purchase of 132 bombers to just 21, a major blow to the Northrop Corporation.

What Are The B-2’s Advanced Combat Capabilities?

<picture></picture>Credit: Photo: United States Air Force

The B-2 Bomber is an incredibly versatile multi-mission platform, one that does far more than just targeted bombing raids. The aircraft’s ultimate purpose, of being a nuclear weapon hidden in the shadows, has fortunately never been fulfilled. The aircraft, however, has distinguished itself in a number of major conflicts through conventional bombing missions. Nonetheless, the aircraft’s reputation has been somewhat marred by multiple major safety incidents.

The B-2 Spirit can perform attack missions at altitudes of up to 50,000 feet, giving it an unrefueled range that exceeds 6,000 nautical miles. The jet can fly more than 10,000 nautical miles with a single midair refueling, giving it impressive endurance capabilities. This meant that the aircraft could strike targets deep within enemy territory and return undetected.

The aircraft entered service in 1997 as the second aircraft to be officially designed with advanced stealth capabilities, following the footsteps of the earlier Lockheed F-117 Nighthawk. However, the Nighthawk was more of a light attack aircraft than a heavy bomber, making the B-2 undoubtedly unique in its dynamic capabilities. The B-2, which is designated as both a conventional and nuclear bomber, was the first aircraft to be deployed to drop a munition in combat during the Kosovo War in 1999. The jet-powered stealth bomber would later make appearances in Iraq, Afghanistan, Libya, and Yemen, according to CNN.

A Deeper Look At The 21 B-2 Spirit Bombers That Were Produced

<picture></picture>

Northrop Grumman built twenty-one B-2A Spirit bombers, each of which was given a sequential Air Vehicle (AV) registration number and a formal name. The first of these jets to roll out of the factory was the AV-1 Spirit of America, which was introduced in 1988 and became the primary testbed for the aircraft type. It entered operational service in 2000. The AV-2 Spirit of Arizona and the AV-3 Spirit of New York quickly followed as radar-cross-section and avionics prototypes.

The AV-4 Spirit of Indiana and the AV-5 Spirit of Ohio were the last two remaining aircraft in the early production lot, and they were the first to log combat hours over the skies of the Balkans in 1999. The first standardized production lot, AV-7 through AV-16, were all advanced and capable aircraft. The AV-11 Spirit of Washington suffered from a tail-pipe fire on Guam in 2010, but it would ultimately be repaired. The AV-12 Spirit of Kansas crashed not long after takeoff from Andersen Air Force Base (AFB) in 2008, marking the first complete loss of an aircraft for the fleet.

The AV-14 Spirit of Georgia is currently out of service, undergoing repairs after a nose gear collapse in 2021, while the AV-16 Spirit of Hawaii was fully written off following a runway excursion at Whiteman Air Force Base in 2022. In total, only 21 jets were ever built, out of over 100 which were planned. This stemmed from a combination of strategic, political and fiscal challenges which prevented the aircraft from ever becoming more popular. The planes were originally designed in the early 1980s to slip past the dense Soviet air-defense networks while dropping gravity-powered nuclear bombs. The justification for the massive amount of money spent on the procurement of this aircraft, however, mostly flew out the window when the Soviet Union collapsed in 1991.

With the threat of communism appearing to recede, Congress began to seriously question the need for a platform that was mostly conceived for an improbable set of circumstances despite carrying an eye-watering price. The unit development costs for this program have ballooned beyond $930 million, and total life-cycle costs for the aircraft exceeded $2 billion per aircraft. Every hour that a B-2 bomber spent in the air required more than a hundred maintenance hours in multi-million-dollar climate-controlled hangars.

The operating expenses of B-2 aircraft dwarfed those of the B-1 and the B-52, the two other primary strategic bombers used by the air force. As a result of this, lawmakers from both parties, spearheaded by Don Dellums and John Kasich, limited the purchase to just $21 billion. Military leaders argued that the existing slate of bombers, alongside the capabilities of powerful cruise missiles, would shrink the importance of investing heavily in this type of stealth platform.

What Is The Bottom Line When It Comes To The B-2 Bomber?

<picture></picture>Credit: Photo: United States Air Force

At the end of the day, there are two stories which must be told when it comes to the B-2 Spirit bomber.
