This was the <strong data-start=\"379\" data-end=\"427\">first-ever operational crash of a B-2 Spirit<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"468\" data-end=\"935\">The official Air Force accident summary says the crash was caused by <strong data-start=\"537\" data-end=\"571\">distorted air-data information<\/strong> entering the B-2\u2019s flight-control computers. Moisture had affected the aircraft\u2019s <strong data-start=\"654\" data-end=\"679\">Port Transducer Units<\/strong>, which caused the computers to calculate <strong data-start=\"721\" data-end=\"744\">inaccurate airspeed<\/strong> and a <strong data-start=\"751\" data-end=\"779\">negative angle of attack<\/strong> during takeoff. That led to an <strong data-start=\"811\" data-end=\"855\">uncommanded 30-degree nose-high pitch-up<\/strong>, causing the aircraft to stall and crash.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"937\" data-end=\"1203\">Both crew members <strong data-start=\"955\" data-end=\"979\">ejected and survived<\/strong>. The pilot had <strong data-start=\"995\" data-end=\"1013\">minor injuries<\/strong>, while the co-pilot suffered a <strong data-start=\"1045\" data-end=\"1076\">spinal compression fracture<\/strong> during ejection, was treated at Tripler Army Medical Center in Hawaii, and was released.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"1205\" data-end=\"1416\">The aircraft was destroyed. The Air Force listed the cost of the lost B-2 at about <strong data-start=\"1288\" data-end=\"1304\">$1.4 billion<\/strong>, making it one of the most expensive aircraft losses in aviation history.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"1418\" data-end=\"1604\">After the crash, the B-2 fleet was paused for safety review. The official Air Force date is <strong data-start=\"1733\" data-end=\"1754\">February 23, 2008<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<h2 data-section-id=\"14703so\" data-start=\"1795\" data-end=\"1826\">Short accurate story version<\/h2>\n<p data-start=\"1828\" data-end=\"2466\">On February 23, 2008, the B-2 Spirit stealth bomber <strong data-start=\"1880\" data-end=\"1900\">Spirit of Kansas<\/strong> began its takeoff roll at Andersen Air Force Base in Guam. Seconds after liftoff, its flight-control computers received bad air-data information caused by moisture in the air-data system. The bomber pitched sharply upward, stalled at low altitude, rolled, and crashed near the runway. Both pilots ejected and survived, but the aircraft was completely destroyed. The loss shocked the Air Force because the B-2 had flown for nearly two decades without a Class A mishap.
